Mary Alice Ireland, 88, 15 days of 89, passed away Friday, July 27, 2018 at her home with her family by her side. She was born on August 15, 1929 to Charles “Pete” and Lucinda (Hackleman) Farmer. She was a 1947 graduate of Dunkirk High School and was the class Valedictorian. In June of 1948 she married John F. Ireland, and he survives.
Mary managed the Central Indiana Gas Office in Dunkirk until starting her family. After being a stay at home mother for many years she returned to work at Stewart Brothers Furniture as the bookkeeper/office manager, retiring from there when her grandchildren were born. She liked to play the piano and enjoyed knitting. She liked to entertain and cherished the times spent with family. She will be remembered for her beef and noodle dinners and sugar cream pie.
In addition to her husband of 70 years, John, she is survived by her two daughters, Carol (Dan) Whitesell and Susan Adams; her grandchildren, Kirsten (Brenda) Ireland, John Whitesell, Laura (Linus) Roessner, Jarrod (Meredith) Whitesell and Sarah Coleman; great granddaughters, Camille Tweedy and Lillian Whitesell; one nephew and four nieces that were special to her; and dear friends from school, Kate, Joan, Norma and Scoop. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister Doris Miller; and a infant grandson.
A service to celebrate Mary’s life will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at Wilsons Shook Funeral Home, Dunkirk Memorial Chapel of Dunkirk, IN. Burial will follow in Dunkirk I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Family and friends may gather to share and remember from 10:00 a.m. to service time on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Mt Tabor United Methodist Church, 217 W.
