Clifford Gene Hammers

April 10, 1933 ~ May 25, 2018 (age 85)

Clifford Gene Hammers, 85, of Farmland, IN passed away peacefully at his residence, with family by his side, Friday, May 25, 2018. He was born April 10, 1933 in Randolph County, IN the son of Hollis “Hod” and Myrtle Fern (Younce) Hammers. He was a graduate of Farmland High School. He honorably served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.

Gene retired in 1992 after 40 years with Indiana Michigan as a Meter Supervisor. He spent a lifetime committed to serving other, touching many lives along the way. He has served as a Scout Master, has assisted with track and cross-country team meets and an official, and has even provided uniforms to various teams. He was faithful to the Monroe Central Boys Basketball Team, attending all home and away games and offering prayer before each game. Gene also assisted in fundraising efforts for other sporting teams and has often donated anonymously to youth-based organizations. His heart extended to senior citizens as well as he regularly provided transportation to medical and other important appointments.

On a community level Gene served as an active lay pastor and teacher for his church. He regularly would show his commitment to those less fortunate through his support of the Farmland Food Pantry and various other agencies including the Muncie Mission, and he has even provided long term free housing to hose in need.

As a local historian Gene worked with the libraries and other agencies to promote the educational experience for both young and old. He would donate money to assist college students with books and tuition. Gene is past president of the Randolph County Community Foundation and was an active member of the Community Foundation’s Scholarship Committee.

Gene was a member of the Mississinewa Christian Church, Farmland American Legion, past President of the Electricians Union of I&M, and past sexton of Hopewell Cemetery.

He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife of 61 years, Betty JoAnn (Mays) Hammers; a son, Jeffrey Gene Hammers (wife, Judith) of Farmland, IN; two daughters, Lori Rae Lyons (husband, Jimmie) of Farmland, IN and Julayne Ann Joseph (husband, Steve) of Paris, IL; a brother, Terry Hammers of Redkey, IN; a sister, Jayne Cox of Hudson, FL; nine grandchildren, Jennifer Weaver (husband, Kirk), Jason Hammers, Jordan Hammers, Jacqueline Rinard (husband, Brad), Sara Lyons, Jacob “Jake” Joseph, Molly Joseph, Ike Joseph and Grace Joseph; and four great grandchildren, Abigail, Lilly, Zach and Evelyn. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Larry and David; and a grandson, Jevon.

A service to celebrate Gene’s life will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at Thornburg Memorial Chapel of Parker City, IN with Jeff Hammers officiating. Burial will follow at Hopewell Cemetery of Farmland, IN. Family and friends may gather to share and remember from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 29th, at the funeral home.
